Maximize and Transform with Coaching

I always have a healthy dose of skepticism. At least that’s what I like to tell myself. I truly enjoy thinking about the in’s and out’s of a situation and analyzing it in a hundred different ways. However, sometimes the truth lies in the practice.

In this case, we’re talking about my journey with coaching. I remember my first time at a coaching course delivered at Mount Royal University. I learned about wait time, paraphrasing, avoiding the question “why” and how to ask open ended questions, to name a few. Slowly but surely, I started to utilize the coaching theory and practice in my HR work. Wow, what a difference it made. Being early in my HR career, I would often be filled with anxiety, stress and bitten nails, when it came to the many daily situations of supporting managers and employees in a union environment. Once I learned some of the coaching foundational knowledge, I felt a weight was lifted off my shoulders.

In this same way, I would also like to offer you an opportunity to lift the weight of your shoulders. I see the hesitancy with coaching either due to time, commitment, cost or reluctance that it would be helpful for their situation. As someone who's been in HR for a while, however, I can vouch for the profound impact coaching can have on fostering growth, enhancing skills (whether its leadership or other skills), and offering a sense of fulfillment.

I have learned coaching can be incredibly effective in the workplace for leaders. It's crucial to navigate complex challenges and foster cohesive team dynamics as a leader. Having coaching can be a bit like a journey of self-discovery, where you can pinpoint your strengths and areas for improvement. I find it’s about being your authentic self and elevating your development. A skilled coach can help offer insights. This in turn allows you to refine your strategies, improve communication, and create a culture of empowerment within your teams. The research does indicate that this can ultimately drive productivity and foster a positive work environment.

But coaching isn't just about work. People also seek coaching to achieve personal milestones, enhance relationships, and attain holistic well-being. I see the opportunities for individuals to gain clarity on their values, set actionable goals, and receive support throughout their journey. Truly, its about someone setting their own path and as a coach, providing you with the support to get there.

Over time, my skepticism of coaching has changed into a passion. Yes, I’ll admit it. I’ve drank the Kool-Aid. Coaching is more than just guidance—it can be a catalyst for transformation and help to empower someone to realize their full potential. I know I certainly have felt it in my own professional career.
